Interior design is undoubtedly a large subject to cover in a single post. Although, the fundamentals remain the same, each project you take-up is unique in its own ways. I use these in every interior styling project i work on. The starting point for any project is to first a look and feel of the architecture of the room. The aesthetics of the room will define pretty much the direction and the approach you take in planning the decor of the room. Professional interior designers make use of the ‘trickery’ to make appear in a certain manner. For example pastel flooring can make the room appear to look much larger, so does the use of textures. A dado can make the room appear to have a vertical length. Much like this, interior designers use plenty of design variances to achieve the right effects. Designer also make use of various balances which is the right mix of the visual weight in a room which is achieved through symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial variations and styles. Creating a focal point is a basic fundamental design principle incorporated in also every room. A focal point is created to draw attention and interest towards a certain inter4esting object in the room. In a few rooms designers opt for multiple focal points. Repetitive use of the same element in several styles and variations is another important principle that is at the core of interior designs. This is achieved with the use of patterns, textures, colors and lines. Besides this, progression and transition is another basic fundamental used in every layout. Progressions can be in the form of increasing and decreasing qualities. Transition on the other hand emphasizes on a smoother flow from one element to another. Join me as a explore, these and many other design basics in the days to come.

So, being a home designer I recently happened to take-on a project for MKG who is a retailer for modular kitchen units. Modular kitchen units are essentially a set of pre-manufactured cabinetry components that can be installed in your cooking space without the hassle of building them from scratch although the option is always available. This becomes a huge cost saver as these units are designed for common spaces in a kitchen and cost nearly 30-40% cheaper when compared to customized designs. We first visited the client’s home and inspected his layout from where we discussed how best we could plan a design around their likes and functions of his family. Based on these inputs we then visited MKG’s store and presented the client with the numerous options available in overhead and under cabinetry models. The client could choose from a variety of styles, designs and cabinetry layouts making the kitchen design process a smooth and an easy one. The cabinets are also available in teak wood, mango wood, plywood and particle board materials. The choice of wood has an impact on the overall pricing of the entire unit. As these units were available in stock with the retailer, clients have a better idea of how a kitchen would look like before it is installed in their homes. For many homeowners, planning a kitchen layout which would be functional to their every day needs and yet be convenient can sometimes be a daunting task which is eliminated by these modular installations as homeowners have a firsthand look and feel of how their kitchen would look like before the installation and accordingly changes can be made! The installation process was also a quick an easy as once these units were chosen at the store, the installation team begun the installation process the following day. The entire process of installation took 4 days and the kitchen was handed over to the homeowners soon after. Overall the process of installing a modular kitchen was much quicker and easier as compared to building a customized unit from scratch. |
