Interior design is undoubtedly a large subject to cover in a single post. Although, the fundamentals remain the same, each project you take-up is unique in its own ways. I use these in every interior styling project i work on. The starting point for any project is to first a look and feel of the architecture of the room. The aesthetics of the room will define pretty much the direction and the approach you take in planning the decor of the room. Professional interior designers make use of the ‘trickery’ to make appear in a certain manner. For example pastel flooring can make the room appear to look much larger, so does the use of textures. A dado can make the room appear to have a vertical length. Much like this, interior designers use plenty of design variances to achieve the right effects. Designer also make use of various balances which is the right mix of the visual weight in a room which is achieved through symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial variations and styles. Creating a focal point is a basic fundamental design principle incorporated in also every room. A focal point is created to draw attention and interest towards a certain inter4esting object in the room. In a few rooms designers opt for multiple focal points. Repetitive use of the same element in several styles and variations is another important principle that is at the core of interior designs. This is achieved with the use of patterns, textures, colors and lines. Besides this, progression and transition is another basic fundamental used in every layout. Progressions can be in the form of increasing and decreasing qualities. Transition on the other hand emphasizes on a smoother flow from one element to another. Join me as a explore, these and many other design basics in the days to come.
